Progression

Students progress through three levels of lessons (Beginner, Intermediate and Advance) over the course of 4 to 6 blocks. Below is a sample learning path:

Block 1: Beginner Class
Block 2: Intermediate Class
Block 3: Intermediate Class
Block 4: Advance Class Graduation!!!

While progression may very from child to child, we'd like to see all children master the skills taught in our swim program within one to two years (4-8 blocks). After successfully completing lessons, families that wish to go beyond recreational swimming are encouraged to join the Fork Union Aquatic Club swim team. The novice swim team level, the White Group, practices three times per week. Swimmers in this group are able to complete a length of both freestyle and backstroke. The group works primarily on learning butterfly and breaststroke, cleaning up major stroke problems on freestyle and backstroke, kicking, starts and turns.

Objectives of the three levels of lessons.

Below are some of the learning objectives for each level:

Beginner Class:
Basic water orientation, holding breath under water/blowing bubbles, kick with assistance (front and back), survival float, basic treading and finally assisted swimming (rowing arms and kicking legs in a semi-coordinated effort while being assisted by the instructor).

Intermediate Class:
Unassisted kick, advanced assisted swimming (front and back), rhythmic breathing, jumping into water over head, and finally surfacing and unassisted swimming approximately 15 meters.

Advance Class:
Unassisted swimming (front and back) approximately 25 meters (one length), advanced rhythmic breathing (i.e. swimming with face in the water, breathing to the side), and finally diving and advance swimming skills.
