FUMA WINS THE VIRGINIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!

One week after winning the 2010 Virginia Prep League Conference Championship, Fork Union Military Academy Swimming and Diving made history on February 20th by winning their first Virginia State Championship in the 30 year history of the competition!  In the process, the Blue Devils set another two State Records (200 Yard Medley Relay – T. Romanini, B. Sundel, J. Gebert, J. Humphrey; and 200 Yard Individual Medley – T. Romanini), while registering an incredible nine All-State swims and 49 personal best times in route to a 423 point victory.  On the boards FUMA diving surprised the field as two virtually unknown first year divers, Obi Okeyo and Eric Palmer, placed 6th and 8th overall respectively.

BLUE DEVIL HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET:

  • 200 Medley Relay finished 1st with a new state record and All-American “A” time of 1:34.48 (Romanini-back 23.75; Sundel-breast 26.22; Gebert-fly 23.54; Humphrey-free 20.97).
  • 200 freestylers finished 3rd (Matt Morio), 6th (Joe Gershun), 7th (Orn Kjartansson), and 11th (Chris Covington)
  • Blue Devil Seniors Tony Romanini and Kurt Housh had great finals performances in the 200 IM (Romanini 1st and Housh 6th place – Romanini broke the state record with a time of 1:53.25).  Right behind them, Sophomore Arroyo finished 10th.
  • 50 freestyle: Junior Blake Sundel earned All-State honors (21.67 – 3rd; 21.50 in prelims), Senior Jake Humphrey finished 6th, and Sophomore Okeyo finished 8th with personal best times.
  • We finished the first day of swimming with superb performances by our flyers.  Jorah Gebert finished 3rd with a new school record and PB time of 51.78, while Junior Riley Phillips finished 8th in finals, and Sophomore Austin Dorsey finished 11th.
  • On Day 2 the 100 frestylers started things off well with 5th, 6th and 11th place finishes (Morio 48.52; Humphrey 48.67 in finals).
  • For the first time in FUMAs history we had three 500 freestylers come back for finals (Gershun 7th, Covington 9th, and Arroyo 11th).
  • 200 Freestyle Relay finished 1st with an All-American “A” time of 1:25.57 (Sundel 21.77; Morio 21.73; Humphrey 21.18; Romanini 20.89).
  • Our Blue Devils finished 2nd, 3rd, and 14th (Phillips) in the 100 back (Romanini – 51.29, All-American “A” time; Gebert – 52.73 in prelims, All-American “B” time).
  • Housh finished 4th in the 100 breast, and just missed breaking the 1 minute barrier with a time of 1:00.03.  Not far behind him, Sundel finished 8th, and Athey finished 15th.
  • We ended the meet with a 3rd place finish, new school record and All-American “B” time in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:13.47 (Housh 49.75; Gebert 47.40; Kjartansson 48.43; and Morio 47.89).

When the dust settled the next closest team finished 111 points behind out Blue Devils, the largest margin of victory in recent history.  For the second year in a row I was honored as the Virginia State Coach of the Year.  This was a culmination of years of dedication, hard work, and attention to detail by our men…that award is theirs.  From day one these young men have been focused on their goals, both in the pool and classroom.  This weekend was a snapshot of the success they’ve experienced all year at FUMA.  They are a fine representation of our Academy.  I’m very proud of them.

FUMA WINS THE VIRGINIA PREP LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FINISHES SECOND AT THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!

We just returned home from the most exciting high school state championship in Virginia history!  We are very proud of what our men accomplished.  It was an amazing meet, featuring several awesome showdowns and 16 (out of 24) new state records --- 10 of the 12 boys records were smashed.

Our Blue Devils started the competition with a bang in the 200 Medley Relay, with a second place finish, team record and All-American reportable time of 1:37.45 (Humphrey-back 26.48; Ibrahim-breast 25.86; Sundel-fly 23.18; Reynard-free 21.93).  In the next event Hussein Mohamed stepped up with a new school record, All-American “A” time, and hard fought second place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:39.55).  Both swimmers went under the old state record!  Blue Devil Junior Kurt Housh followed up in the 200 IM with a great finals performance (7th place) and personal best time of 2:01.47.  Next up we had two underclassmen final in the 50 freestyle, Sophomore Blake Sundel (21.84 – 6th) and Junior Jake Humphrey (22.02 – 7th), both personal best times.  We finished the first day of swimming with superb performances by our flyers --- Sherif Ibrahim finished 4th with a new school record and PB time of 51.95 in the 100 fly, while Blake Sundel finished 8th in finals with a hard back-to-back swim after the 50 free in a time of 55.12 (he went a PB time in prelims of 54.58).  Finally, our divers came through with splendid performances.  Pete Fletcher finished 4th and Ted Arcidi finished 9th in the 1 meter event.

Mohamed opened the second day in grand fashion by smashing the 100 freestyle state record on the way to a 1st place finish, his second All-American “A” time, and a new school record of 45.31.   In the 500 free prelims, Sophomore Chris Covington shaved off over 13 seconds from his PB time to go 5:07.09!  He finished 15th in finals, scoring unanticipated points.  In the next event we took on heavily favored Collegiate School in the 200 freestyle relay.  Every time we worked the splits Collegiate came out on top (after all they had four state champions on their relay).  In a race reminiscent of the 2008 Olympic men’s 400 freestyle relay race between the USA and France, we stepped up to the block as the underdogs with a lot of heart.  It was the most exciting high school race I’ve ever witnessed…in the end somehow Blue Devil Sophomore Blake Sundel got his hand to the wall first to out touch the Collegiate swimmer by .01, winning the relay in a All-American “A” time, and setting a new state record of 1:24.82 (Mohamed, 21.16; Humphrey, 21.65; Ibrahim, 20.93; and Sundel, 21.08).  This was also Mohamed’s third All-American “A” time for his lead-off 50 free swim in the relay.  One event later Humphrey turned in a PB time in the 100 backstroke of 57.90 (57.58 in prelims) to finish 12th in finals.  Freshman Obi Okeyo also managed to swim his way into finals with a PB time of 58.60, finishing 16th overall.  For the last individual event of the meet, the duo of Ibrahim and Housh fired it up in finals of the 100 breaststroke.  Ibrahim smashed his own school record, finishing 2nd, in an All-American “A” time of 57.52.  Housh finished 5th with an outstanding PB time of 1:01.31.  In the 400 free relay our men fought valiantly to a 5th place finish and new school record of 3:15.81 (Mohamed, 45.80; Housh, 50.85; Caudill, 49.87; and Reynard 49.29).

There were many other outstanding Blue Devil swims at the meet which I don’t want to overlook:

  • 200 Freestyle: Joseph Caudill, PB time of 1:51.35 – 12th place; 8th grader Michael Guerci, PB time of 1:54.51 – 14th place, the only 8th grader in the meet on the boys side to score in the finals; and Chris Covington, PB time of 1:56.98 – 19th place.
  • 200 IM: Sophomore Preston Edwards, PB time of 2:09.09 (prelims) – 13th place; Sophomore Riley Phillips, PB time of 2:13.62 – 18th place; and Freshman Sito Arroyo, PB time of 2:14.77 – 22nd place.
  • 50 Freestyle: Brook Reynard, PB time of 22.89 – 16th place; and Freshman Obi Okeyo, PB time of 23.32.
  • 100 Fly: Preston Edwards, PB time of 57.99 (prelims) – 16th place; and Jeremy Gencavage, PB time of 59.21.
  • 100 Freestyle: Brook Reynard, PB time of 50.38 – 15th place.
  • 200 Freestyle “B” Relay: 8th grader Guerci splits relay in 23.82; Housh leads off in PB time of 23.12.
  • 100 Backstroke: Riley Phillips, PB time of 59.84 – 21st place; and Jeremy Gencavage , PB time of 1:00.60.
  • 100 Breast: Junior Eddie Athey, PB time of 1:05.72 (prelims) – 12th place.

In the end we finished as the 2009 Men’s Overall Team Champion Runner-up.  We were also awarded the Men’s Team Sportsmanship award, and Coach Bocci was voted the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association Men’s Swim Coach of the Year, an honor which is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our swimmers and divers.

FUMA Finishes 4th at the high school state championship!

Our men came together as a team to accomplish this leap in standings (from 12th place last year), as was evident by our fantastic relay swims.  We started the meet as a huge underdog in the 200 medley relay with a group of virtually unknown swimmers seeded four seconds out of the top spot.  It was going to be a struggle just to make the finals.  When the smoke cleared they finished second overall with a time of 1:38.91 (K. Housh 26.59, S. Ibrahim 26.78, M. Jewell 23.69, T. Calhoun 21.85), in the process smashing our school record by over three seconds!  For an encore our 200 free relay duplicated this same feat, again finishing second and destroying the school record with a time of 1:28.61 (M. Jewell 22.37, B. Reynard 22.65, S. Ibrahim 21.47, T. Calhoun 22.12).  Finally, our 400 free relay, composed of all underclassmen, finished eighth in the championship final with a time of 3:28.90 (K. Housh, J. Warren, J. Caudill, B. Reynard).  This marked the first time that FUMA placed all three relays in the championship final!

In addition to our incredible relay efforts, we had several great individual swims including M. Jewell (7th – 50 freestyle; 8th – 100 butterfly), K. Housh (8th – 200 IM; 10th – 100 breaststroke), S. Ibrahim (16th – 100 freestyle, 6th – 100 breaststroke), T. Calhoun (9th – 50 freestyle), B. Reynard (16th – 50 freestyle), and J. Brown (13th 100 breaststroke).  This meet also marked the championship debut for freshman C. Covington (PB times in the 200 and 500 freestyle), Juniors J. Warren (PB time in the 200 freestyle) and J. Caudill (PB time 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly), and 8th grader Obi Okeyo (PB time in the 100 back).  Other notable swims came from veteran Junior J. Gencavage (PB times in the 200 IM and 100 fly).  In all the team broke six school records!

Fork Union Military Academy is expanding its nationally recognized post-graduate athletic program to include men's swimming. We train in our new multi-million-dollar aquatic center, practicing up to 11 times per week, (including video stroke analysis, dryland conditioning and travel training camps), while competing in several of the biggest competitions in the country. We are looking for young men that have excelled in the pool and possess the strong work ethic necessary to compete at the highest level of college and international swimming. Acceptance into this program is based on national ranking, National Age Group Motivational Times achievement, core GPA and current SAT/ACT scores. Selected athletes will complete in our one-year program to become prepared for the rigors of the top academic and athletic college programs.

In our first year in the new pool we produced the fastest 50 and 100 yard freestyle high school swimmer in Virginia. He was also an individual champion at the Eastern Prep School Championship and an All-American. He is now swimming for the University of Virginia on scholarship. Likewise, our post-graduate programs have consistently placed athletes in outstanding college programs. Recently our football team was showcased on the award-winning sports documentary "NFL Films Present", and both our basketball and football programs have been featured on ESPN.

As post-graduates, our students acquire study skills, take academic classes (some with the ability to obtain college credit hours), take test preparation classes, and retake both the SAT and ACT to increase scores. Below is a sample curriculum:

Term 1 - English 5 with SAT English/Verbal Prep
Term 2 - Advanced Mathematic Concepts 5 with SAT Math Prep
Term 3 - Select Accredited College Course (6 credit hours)
Term 4 - Computer Science
Term 5 - Advanced U.S./World History

If you are a young man who has what it takes to perform at the highest level, and has the goal of competing for a top university, but is looking for a path forward, please complete a questionnaire and return it ASAP.
